    Our Reviews

    I was very pleased with this experience. I called late on a Tuesday afternoon and they were able to put me in the next day. I brought the car to the shop and walked home (they did offer me a ride, but it was a great day outside).

    Throughout the day they let me know the status of the car and got me exact dollar amount quotes. I felt that they were very honest, and did not suggest anything that I did not already know was a concern. Often as a female, I get people trying to sell me stuff I don't need. They definately did not do that. I would definately use them again!

    Automotive Tips from Simpson Brothers Garage: Serpentine Belt Overview

    The technicians at Simpson Brothers Garage know your serpentine belt drives important engine accessories like your alternator, air conditioning compressor, and power steering. In some cars it may also power the power brakes or water pump. The serpentine belt is powered by the engine and winds around pulleys and the accessories. Some cars in Grand Junction have two serpentine belts.

    The serpentine belt, the belt tensioner (which maintains the appropriate tension on the belt) and the idler pulleys are together known as the accessory drive system.

    Now your serpentine belt and the belt tensioner will just wear out over time – that’s why your vehicle manufacturer has a scheduled belt replacement interval. The team at Simpson Brothers Garage in Grand Junction can inspect your serpentine belt for wear and get it replaced if it’s time.

    Let Simpson Brothers Garage Help You Keep Your Vehicle Another Couple of Years

    Grand Junction area residents may remember when the U.S. government's “Cash for Clunkers” program made a splash on the news scene. People were offered incentives to trade in old vehicles for new, in the interest of better and improved air quality from reduced emissions.

    But a lot of Grand Junction drivers want to hang onto their old clunkers. They're dependable and they're paid for. Owners would love to see the odometers on those vehicles turn past 200,000 miles (320,000 km), as long as the repair bills don't get too expensive.

    There are a lot of vehicles on CO roads that have run past the 200,000 mile (320,000 km) odometer reading. Is there something that their owners are doing that keeps these vehicles on the road? Or did they just win the “lemon lottery,” and luck out by getting a particularly good vehicle? Not surprisingly, most of these owners have something in common. They never skip an oil change. Can keeping a vehicle on the road for 200,000 miles (320,000 km) really be that easy for Grand Junction drivers?

    Actually, it makes sense. Oil is the lifeblood of a vehicle. Clean oil ensures that the engine will run efficiently and staves off the build-up of sludge that can eventually damage engine parts. Oil changes remove dirty oil and replace dirty oil filters, keeping an engine clean and running smoothly, just like eating right keeps our hearts healthy by preventing build-up in our arteries.

    But there's another reason why not skipping an oil change can result in a longer life for your car. When you bring your car in to Simpson Brothers Garage for an oil change, all of the fluid levels are checked and topped off. If these fluids are depleted, dirty or low, they can damage the engine.

    If a fluid is significantly low, it usually indicates a leak somewhere, leading to an inspection of relevant parts. This inspection and the replacement of the worn part can prevent repair bills and maintain the health of the engine.

    At an oil change, your technician at Simpson Brothers Garage will also do a quick check for worn belts or hoses, uneven tread wear, leaking shock absorbers and other signs of wear and tear. This advance notice allows the owner to replace parts before they break down and possibly damage your vehicle.

    The oil change is also a good time to review any other service that the vehicle might need. Many car owners rely on their pros at Simpson Brothers Garage for good auto advice on check-ups and follow-up vehicle care that will keep older cars running well.

    Parts wear out on older vehicles. There's no avoiding it. As the odometer chugs upward toward 200,000 miles (320,000 km), the vehicle will need several batteries, a couple of alternators and water pumps, a new set of shocks and possibly some brake rotors. But these items—all together—add up to far less than the cost of a new vehicle.

    Good vehicle care and preventive maintenance are the hallmark of Grand Junction drivers who have kept their vehicles on the road and running past the age when most of us have given up and headed back to a car lot. We can learn from their wisdom.

    So treat your car right: Take good care of it and don't skip the check-ups at Simpson Brothers Garage in Grand Junction.

    Keeping Your 'Old Faithful' Auto Running

    At Simpson Brothers Garage we've had a lot of Grand Junction customers asking how they can make their vehicles last longer. These questions are actually a reflection of a trend that's been building for several years in CO. The median age of personal vehicles is now over nine years. And 33 percent of all vehicles on the road have over 75,000 miles (120,000 km) on them. It looks like it's going to keep heading in that direction for a while. With high fuel prices, a lot of CO folks are putting off buying a new car.

    So let's say you're one of the average in the Grand Junction area; you've got a nine-year-old car with 80,000 miles (130,000 km) on the odometer. What can you do to make it last another year or two?

    Let's start with the premise that there's no reason that a modern car can't run for 200,000 miles (320,000 km) with proper care in Grand Junction. The engineering and manufacturing quality is there.

    Of course, some parts will wear out along the way, but there's no reason for a catastrophic meltdown if Grand Junction drivers stay on top of their recommended car maintenance. The maintenance schedule in some vehicle manufacturer's owner's manuals runs out at 60,000 miles (100,000 km) or so: how do Grand Junction vehicle owners know what to do when they're way past that?

    It is a challenge, for example: If a service is recommended every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) for the first 60,000 miles (100,000 km), you can just keep getting it done at least every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) after you hit 60,000 miles (100,000 km). But, it gets more complicated because older engines lose some efficiency, are dirtier inside and are just more stressed. That means it's very important to not miss any scheduled services. Skipping just one oil change at Simpson Brothers Garage in Grand Junction, for example, leaves an opportunity for sludge to build up. Talk to your service advisor at Simpson Brothers Garage for more details.

    So all the usual things like oil changes, transmission service, coolant service, brakes, power steering, fuel system cleaning – all that stuff needs to be maintained. People responsible for fleet vehicles around Grand Junction are sticklers for scheduled maintenance. They know that money spent on maintenance saves them three ways:

    1. it keeps efficiency from decreasing;
    2. it prevents repairs, and;
    3. they can postpone purchasing new vehicles.

    Having the oil changed may be the most important thing Grand Junction drivers can do. A full-service oil change at Simpson Brothers Garage means that all of your other fluids get topped off so they are never low enough to cause damage. It also gives your friendly and knowledgeable Simpson Brothers Garage service advisor a chance to spot problems in the early stages so that you can fix them before they get worse. And it gives you a touch point with an automotive professional along the way to remind you of things that aren't scheduled as often – things like differential service and timing belt replacement.

    If you live in the Grand Junction area and have an older vehicle, you may need to follow the severe service maintenance schedule. Check your owner's manual and talk with us at Simpson Brothers Garage. Conditions inside an older engine, transmission and cooling system can arguably be considered severe – so shorter intervals could well be called for.

    And, the team at Simpson Brothers Garage strongly encourages Grand Junction drivers to consider using high mileage formulation fluids. They're fluids like engine oil, transmission fluid and coolant that are formulated for older engines. They have special additives to clean deposits, and to condition and restore seals and gaskets that dry out with age. Some Grand Junction auto owners start using higher mileage formulations at around 50,000 miles (80,000 km) as a preventive measure.

    Of course you also want to still look marvelous in your older car as you drive around Grand Junction. Salt and road grime wreak havoc on your paint job and can lead to body rust – so regular washing is very important. Also, a good quality waxing is recommended at least twice a year.
